The General Convention is the governing body of The Episcopal Church that meets every three years. It is a bicameral legislature that includes the House of Deputies and the House of Bishops, composed of deputies and bishops from each diocese. During its triennial meeting, deputies and bishops consider a wide range of important matters facing the Church. The General Conventionf of the Episcopal Church is coming to the Diocese of Texas, in Austin; and we need your help!
of the Episcopal Church 2018
As you may know the Diocese of Texas will be hosting the General Convention of the Episcopal Church. All members of St. James are invited to volunteer at the
General Convention to be held in Austin, TX on July 5 - 13. There are numerous opportunities to volunteer. Volunteer services require sitting, standing or some walking. There are opportunities
in many different areas: Community Awareness - safety, coordinate with security; Communication - an information center and lost and found; House of Bishops and House of Deputies Support - pages serve
to take messages between the two houses; ECW Triennial - registration, greeters, etc.; Logistics - room checkers, greet people; Registration - needs lots of volunteers early beginning July 1st;
Virtual Binder/Tech Support - distribute tablets, help people with technology (the convention is totally paperless); Worship /Ushers - there is an evening service daily; Volunteer Services - help
coordinate volunteers, registration, data entry. The shifts are approximately 4 hours. On any day that you volunteer you can go to the convention to observe free of charge. You can volunteer for as
many days and as many shifts as you wish. Volunteers must wear the t-shirt provided. All of these shifts will be at the Convention Center in Austin.
Diocesan Event - this is will be on July 7th, all are invited to hear Bishop Curry preach at a Worship Service. They will not serve communion because they want to make this is an ecumenical event. That way everyone attending will feel comfortable and no one will be excluded from the service. After the service there will be a huge Texas BBQ and other festivities. (Attendees will need to prepay for the food option.) The Bishop wants to "show off" our Texas hospitality! This event will be at the Palmer Events Center.
Keep in mind that the first few days will have more of a party feel and the last few days will be more business-like. You can sign up to volunteer at http://bit.ly/GenConReg2018.
I look forward to seeing many of you at the convention volunteering. I personally plan to volunteer on July 11 and 12, and I definitely plan to attend the worship service and event festivities on July 7th!
